Mind Pops Related to Hallucinations In Schizophrenia?
Schizophrenia is a mental disorder with signs and symptoms like hearing hallucinations, paranoid and bizarre delusions and disorganized speech or thinking. Many persons affected with this disorder cannot find employment and thus many suffer from poverty and homelessness. Schizophrenics are prone to substance abuse and dependence, which worsens the prognosis of their condition.
Mind pops common among schizophrenics
Researchers compared frequency of mind-pops in participants with schizophrenia, depression and mentally-normal individuals. It was found out that at the time of experiment:
- 100% of schizophrenia patients have mind-pops
- 86% of mentally healthy participants have it
- 81% of depressed patients have it
Researchers say that mind-pops is frequent in patients who experience history of hallucinations and those who are currently having it. Based on their study, hallucinations can be related to mind-pop phenomenon that is normal among normal people. Among schizophrenics, mind pops manifests in a different way.
The study will appear in the journal Psychiatry Research.
