A compound found in turmeric called curcumin is found to prevent clumping of protein associated with onset of Parkinson’s disease, according to a study made by researchers from the Michigan State University. They found out that curcumin can rescue proteins from aggregating into useless clumps that is suspected to cause development of Parkinson’s disease.

A newly developed experimental drug called Bapineuzumab showed huge promise someday in treating Alzheimer’s disease, a degenerative nervous disorder that currently affects more than 26.6 million elderly people worldwide. It has no cure, and is known for placing huge burden on caregivers. Current management for Alzheimers consists only of measures designed to reduce loss of cognitive function.

A new drug is found to help radically reduce the effects stroke on the brain, according to studies in monkeys and limited experiments in humans. If approved, it will help people recover from stroke without suffering from long-term consequences, according to researchers from Toronto Western Hospital in Ontario, Canada. The drug, called PSD-95 inhibitor, can help preserve much of the brain function if given within 3 hours after the cardiovascular accident.

A study made by United Kingdom Medical Research Council and Alzheimer’s society with some participation from Pfizer-Eisa and Lundbeck, who donated pills for research, shows that Donepezil may also be beneficial for advanced cases of Alzheimer’s disease. It is also known as Aricept. The drug is a reversible acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, meaning it inhibits breakdown of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine to help increase its level and duration of action.
